According to the National Commission for Allied & Health-Care Professions Act 2021, Occupational therapy become an independent professional in the healthcare field. In a previous bill related to the formulation of regulatory body written as “Medically directed” field. But now in the recent amendment, it has been said that Occupational therapy does not require any authority to work as a health care professional. It has given autonomy & independence to Occupational Therapy. And it will also help in professional upliftment.

In an earlier draft Occupational therapy was clubbed with many other professionals like movement therapists, drama therapists, Recreational therapists music therapists and podiatrists. But in the current draft occupational therapists gain a unique identity.

The bill also has clear provisions for the formation of separate councils for all the recognised professions. Occupational therapy is one of the recognised categories of profession. Occupational therapy being one of the recognised categories is all set to now have an independent national Council for OT Professionals. This is a landmark decision of the central government towards regulation & standardization of Occupational Therapy in India.

March 28, 2021, marked the beginning of a new era for the Occupational Therapy profession as the National Commission for Allied and Health Care Profession Act recognised OT as an independent profession and as a recognized category of the healthcare profession. The struggle for the national-level Occupational Therapy Council is not new, it has been started in the last six decades but momentum gained in the last three decades. Role of AIOTA (All India Occupational Therapy Association) is important in this struggle.
